Coalbed Methane (CBM) Potency in Air Dingin Area, Ombilin Basin, West Sumatera
The Ombilin Basin is a Tertiary intermontane basin, located within the Barisan Mountain Range of West Sumatera. Despite its relatively small Tertiary basin covering approximately 1500 sq km within the Padang Highland, the Ombilin Basin contain sequence of Tertiary sediment up to
15,000 ft thick. The basin is well known for coal mining carried out since 1891 in Sawahlunto area.
Based on ARI/ study (2003), methane content in the basin ranging from 250-300 scflton. CMCGR work for CBM exploration carried out in Air Dingin Area (2009) showing methane content from seam B (at depth 369.5-371.5 tm-ts 181 scflton and seam C (at depth 380.24-393.8 m) is
188.3 scflton with 91.8% methane composition.
The coalbed methane research was performed on coal from Eocene age of Sawahlunto
Formation. These coal is classified as sub-bituminous coal with calorifK;,,..Value 6,300 cal/gr (adb).
