Coal resources in central Sumatra Indonesia
This report which describes the geological setting and physical features of the most important coal deposits in Central Sumatra is based on detailed studies over 13 years by the Sub-Directorate of Coal and Peat Exploration, which is the most experienced and well equipped government coal exploration group in this country.
The Sub-Directorate of Coal and Peat Exploration within the Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR) is part of the Directorate General of Geology and Mineral Resources of the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
The Central Sumatra basin area sensu latu is the second largest basin in terms of coal resources after the South Sumatra basin, in addition to considerable quantity of Paleogene coals which are potential targets for future exploration.
Detailed coal exploration at Ombilin, including cored diamond drilling began in 1963 and has continued intermittently up to the present. Routine development exploration activity is needed by the colliery production plan• ning. Elswhere in central Sumatra, specific coal mapping, sampling, and drilling has been undertaken since 1983 (Table 1). Geological basin studies and other regional studies undertaken by the Sub-Directorate have incor• porated systematic geological mapping by the DMR and the Geological Research and Development Center (GRDC) and the result of recent petroleum studies.
Since 1986, the Sub-Directorate activity in Central Sumatra has been suspended and the exploration work is being continued at Cerenti coalfield by the Directorate of Coal (DOC) of the Directorate General of Mines supported by the Nippon Energy Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan.
