In 1976, the joint research project of the former Geological Survey of Indonesia and the University of Tokyo started. The subject was "Stratigraphy, paleontology and chronology of the hominid fossil bearing formations in Java". From 1977 to 1979 the project was continued as the Technical Cooperation project CTA-4l which had the objective of strengthening services at the Geological Survey of Indonesia. The International Cooperation Agency (JICA) took charge of implementation of the project. In 1979 the Geological Research and Development Centre (GRDC) branched off from the former Geological Survey of Indonesia, and became the counterpart institution of the project. As the result of works under this project, detailed lithostratigraphy of formations was clarified particularly in the Sangiran area in Central Java where a good number of hominid fossils had been discovered. Numerous turf layers and several distinct lahar deposits indicate the occurrence of volcanic eruptions in the past. Fission track dating of these tuff layers provided as absolute time. scale to the stratigraphic sequence. It is consistent with the result obtained by paleomagnetic research on polarity reversals.
