Prospek industri dan potensi endapan kalsium karbonat di Indonesia
Calcium carbonate deposit or limestone is a carbonate rock consisted predominantly of calcite and or aragonite minerals. Both of minerals have the same chemical composition but different in their crystallographic systems. Aragonlte occurs mostly as constituents of mod ern carbonate rocks, e.g. beachrock, reefrock and marine bioskeletals, as well as ancient calcium carbonate rocks or
limestones lying In the seawater environment since their depositions.
The common deleterious minerals In the calcium carbonate rocks are silica, clay, and organic matter, as well as dolomite. The proportion of these minerals are very Important In the calcium carbonate applications.Calcium carbonate deposits or limestone are found in marine sediments or their metamorphosed equivalents, except for a very minor proportion formed from evaporation of mineral-laden spring water. A preponderance of calcareous sediments Is formed by aquatic organisms, both plant and animal. Biochemical and chemical precipitation also contribute to calcareous accumulations in marine sediments as well as to sea- floor chemical replacement.
Commercially, calcium carbonate rock or limestone Is classified on the basis of the amount of lime (Ca0), magnesia (MgO) and silica (Si0z). In industrial practice the high calcium limestone is synonlmous with the chemical grade limestone and signifies as rock containing 95% or more of CaCOg3. Lime and carbon dioxyde (COp) are all widely used as industrial chemical derived by calclnatlon of limestone at temperature of about 900°C. Lime or quicklime, a metallic oxyde of Ca,combines readily with water to form hydrates that have different uses from the corresponding oxydes. If the calcium carbonate (limestone) Is calcined at temperatur around 2,000°C, the product Is called dead-burned limestone that do not combine with water. Suitable limestone as source of Ca0 and COp vary considerably depending upon texture, structure and other physical properties as well as chemical composition.
Calcium carbonate Is one of the many industrial minerals and rocks having the most widely applications In various industries. The most larger consumers are construction and cement industries, followed by many Industries such as paper, paint, plastic, cosmetic, pharmacy, steel, agroindustries, etc. Calcium carbonate Is Used either as raw (ROM) or after pulverization, calcination, hydration and reprecipitation
