Previous epithermal gold mines in Indonesia
The known occurences are almost located in the Barisan Mountain area. Most deposit are hosted in Tertiary volcanics and are considered to be late in Tertiary in age A number of areas contain gold mineralization in quartz stringers in pre Tertiary metamorphic rocks. The older gold deposits tend to be more common in the northern part of Sumatera where placer are also more common. The host rocks to most placers deposits have not been dated, though some are thought to be tertiary suggesting that the gold has been derived from pre Tertiary deposits. However, in some cases the host rocks to placers are quaternary, suggesting that some of the tertiary deposits have also been reworked. A few example of gold bearing skarn deposits are also known from Sumatera: at Muara Sipongi and platinum is also known from the area.
