The Platinum group elements (Pt-Pd-Os-Ir-Ru-Rh)
These are ring complexes several kilometers accross encased orogenic zone characterised by some units similar to those of Island arcs. No bedding is apparent in the field.Their age ranges from Devonian to Cretaceous. Their geochemistry (magma type) and metallogeny (PGE element distribution and type of metal) are largely unknown. The known mineralization associated with these complexes are exclusively placers with gold and in which alloys of Pt dominant over the other P.G.E mineral phases. These alloys are strongly ferromagnetic and can be easily separated : a guide for exploration. The present studies (Tulameen in British Colombia-Fifield in Australia) show intrusions with a core of dunite and clinopyroxenites and amphibolic and/or phlogopitic gabbros in outer parts. The chrome spine! does not give any ore, a few schlieren being rare exceptions. The P.G.E. minerals occur as inclusions in the chromite, or directly in dunite-linopyroxenite units. The P.G.E occur as very small grains, but some big nuggets of Pthave been found in several placers associated with these alaskan intrusions.
