Report of the Unesco Volcanological Mission to Study the Agung Volcano
The catastropic eruption of Agung Volcano on the Island of Bali, Indonesia, in March 1963, caused the loss of more than 1,500 lives and extremely heavy economic loss of more than 5,000,000,000 Rupiahs. The eruption called for the evacuation of some 140,000 people from the danger areas, and the number of people whon it becane necessary to transmigrate immediately rose to 250,000. President Soekarno called the eruption a national disaster comparable to the Krakatau eruption in 1883.
