The Republic of Indonesia comprises the world's largest archipelago consisting of 13,700 islands of and islets of which an estimated 6,000 are inhabited by about 186 million people in 1993. Five largest of islands are widely known in the world viz. Irian Jaya (West New Guinea), Kalimantan (Part of Borneo), Sumatera (Andalas), Sulawesi (Celebes), and Java.
