Groundwater Management and Related Water Resources Issues in the Southeast Asia and East Asia Region
During the last few decades groundwater availability is facing increasing pressures. Water quality and quantity deterioration. physical changes of the aquifers, related problems of salt water encroachment, land subsidence, massive drop water table, and increasing pollution from the surface water has effect the groundwater resource. Problems related to law and regulations for extraction by urban, industry and agriculture, variability in patterns of upstream rainfall, broken down water related infrastructures, a frail information system, water related health problems, induced 'natural' hazards, diminishing of traditional wisdom practices, and emerging issues related to transboundary water management are some of the problems to be discussed.
In conjunction to the IPCC 2007 global objectives, an international groundwater meeting was held in Bali. It gathered scientist and practitioners from various countries of the Asia Pasific Region to discuss options for overgoming these problems. The meeting was jointly supported by Indonesian and Japanese organizations. Papers were presented with a broad spectrum for supporting a better groundwater management in the future. Local problems with regional perspective were discussed. This booklet contained papers with new perspectives that may be of use to enrich the knowledge bowl for the groundwater community.
