Although coal can be found throughout the Indonesian Archepelago, major mining activities have long been fairly well concentrated in three locations. As early as 1850 private companies were working deposits in Kalimantan (Borneo). Today four domestic firms continue this tradition. In addition, extensive exploration in being conducted under seven production sharing contracts which Indonesia signed with international companies. If supply contracts were signed immediately, these operations could be in production by 1986/87 for domestic consumption and/or export.
