Coal may be used directly as in combustion. It may be converted into metallurgical coke or char as in carbonization. It may also be converted into more readily transportable forms, such as gases and liquids, as in gasification and liquefaction. To some extent, characteristics of coal dictate how coal will be utilized. Preparation and/or pretreatment are needed if coals with undesirable characteristics are to be used. Coal preparation can, in some cases, produce significant economic benefits to the proncess. The impact of coal preparation on coal utilization is summarized in table 3.1.
