Environmental Implications And Strategies For Expanded Coal Utilization
The utilization of coal as an energy source, both by means of the steam engine and in the form of coke, was a major characteristic of the first industrial Revolution. It was on coal that nations built their industrial power in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As early as 1860, Great Britain was producing over 80 megatons of pit-coal, and it is probably not an exaggeration to say that, with the control of the oceans and overseas dominions, coal made her the dominant industrial power for several decades.
