The area studied lies between 18 and 24 km south of samarinda along either side of the road to Balikpapan, between Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates 9934 in the north, 9928 in the south, 0509 in the west and 0514 in the east; and comprises an area of approximately 30 square kilometer (Figs. 1,5 and 19). The area was selected on the basis of out crops of gently dipping coal seams seen along the Balikpapan road, and reported by Edwards (1977) in the area where the axis of the prangat anticline plunges southwards, Ease of access along the network of logging roads was also an important factor in selecting this area.
