Beneath the loose mantle of soil ,vegetation ,streams ,and ponds that are draped like a cloth over the surface of the earth ,there is fundation of solid rock,usually called bedrock.here and there ,in cliffs ,on mauntain sides ,in road cuts ,on barren islands ,the rocky fundation just through the mantle and froms outcrops.samples taken from outcrops ,together with samples recovered in mines ,tunnels ,well and drill holes ,provide the evidence upon which an important branch of the science of geology is built.the special branch of geology that deals with the occurrence ,origin ,and history of rocks is called petrology.
