In the exploration and subsequent recovery of mineral resources, which in some countries constitute an important part of the national wealth, nuclear techniques play a significant role. They have, for example, been successfully used for a number of years in underground and surface exploration, in laboratory analysis, in process control and in studies carried out at the mine and in the field. The growing concern about the availability of mineral resources to meet ever increasing world demands poses a major challenge in the areas of mineral exploration, mining and processing. In recognition of the great importance of continued availability of minerals in sufficient amounts to satisfy worl demand, the IAEA convened a symposium on Nuclear Techniques in Exploration, Extraction and processing of Mineral Resources in Vienna from 7 to 10 March, 1977. The principal aim of this symposium was to review and discuss new concepts and developments in nuclear technology as applied to oil and gas, coal, and other minerals; nuclear fuel materials were excluded from the scope of the symposium.
