This this book should reflect an era of considerable progress in the study of industrial location as a geographical problem. But it also reflects some of the uncertainty that inevitably accompanies a period of intellectual innovation. Particularly, it reveals uncertainty concerning how far location theory can ever adequately account for the complex reality of the industrial world, and how far some of the critical variables can ever be measured with any kind of precision. It also reveals uncertainty as to how far some existing approaches may require substantial modification in the near future. The next geographical revolution may still be a long way off, but there is a clear trend toward even greater emphasis on "behavioral" aspects of location decision making and the beginnings of a movement toward a closer professional involvement with conditions of human welfare, social justice and the quality of the environment. Both these emergent themes find some expression in this book; they may become the dominant themes of the 1970s.
