The workshop series is aimed at drawing on the expertise of APEC member economies to assist developing member economies to facilitate and liberalise coal trade and investment. The need to address coal trade and investment issues is being driven by the rapid expansion in coal use throughout APEC . Forecasts by the APEC Energy Working Group project coal based electricity generating capacity to double between 1992 and 2010. This will take up 45% of total power infrastructure investment of $US1. 6 trillion in APEC over this period. Most APEC economies plan to expand coal generation with capacity expected to double in 12 developing and newly industrialised economies. At least nine APEC economies are coal producer and will need to attract new investment to support this expansion in coal demand.
