Each year our industrialized society consumes vast quanitities of raw materials and the continuing demand for many important minerals has to be supplied by the discovery of now reserves .In order to locate new sources of these minerals the exploration geologist must have a good understanding of existing ore deposits, and the methods used in their discovery.
This new text provides a wide-ranging account of ore deposit geology and demonstrates how an understanding of existing deposits can assist in new discoveries .Each majoar ore deposit type is reviewed in general terms, before focussing on a particular mining district or districts .The genetic models which have been suggested for the deposit type are then critically examined .finally ,the exploration methods which have been proved to be the most effective are described .particular emphasis is placed on assessing the relative importance of genetic models in determining exploration straregy.
The mineral deposits described in Ore Deposit Geology are located mainly in North Americal,Australia ,Africa and western Europe.in many cases the deposits described are new operating mines or even those in the final stages of evaluation .Ore deposits are described with an appreciation of the economic realities which determine whether the deposit is likely to be mined .The text is illustrated by over 200 line diagrams and illustrations and each chapter is accompanied by an extensive bibliography .
Senior undergraduate students and professional geologists will find much of interest in this book .
The authors teach at the Camborne School of mines ,where their perspective of ore deposits has been influenced by the fact that their colleagues include geologists ,mining engineers ,minerals economists and mineral technologists.
The cover illustrations show:grain mount viewed under cross-polarized light ,cassiterite crystal locked in chlorite (spine);detailed geological mapping onto aerial photographs in the search for volcanogenic mineralization ;chalcocite vein and secondary copper mineralization ;blast at a large open pit iron ore mine .
