Field Geologists Manual
It is often stated that the strength of the institute lies in its branches and this is so because within the branches most of the technical discussions and developments take place. During the minerals boom of the 1960s there was intense field geological activity with significant deposits of bauxite, coal, copper, petroleum, manganese, nickel, titanium, uranium, etc., being discovered and/or confirmed. Members of the Sydney Branch, one of the largest of The Institute branches, ranging through Australasia and beyond. were no less active in the exploration field than other Institute members during this time, and participated in these experiences and developments in techniques. The field Geologists' Manual was written and compiled for Australian use and has provided a valuable guide for the field geologist. Since the first edition of the manual was published in 1976 it has found wide acceptance in both Australia and other parts of the world. To meet the continuing demand for the manual this 2nd edition which incorporates some new and updated material has been published. The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is indebted to Mr. D. A. Berkman for undertaking the revision of the manual.
