Mining, Society and a Sustainable World
Mining and sustainable development might appear to be incompatible objectives, yat mining generates primary wealth as well as essential materials for society. Key question in relation to mining's contribution to sustainable development, as opposed to simple economic development, are: Is the wealth generated by mining invested in sustainable outcomes, such as human, social, and ecological capital? Do the people most affected by mining (e.g.,local communities, and especially aboriginal people)benefit proportionately, and are the benefits durable? And are the environmental impacts of mining minimized, and revesible or effectively remediable after mine closure? Answer to these questions and others are explored by the authors in this book, who represent a unique group of scientists, researchers, government and NGO members, and industrypractitioners, united by their concern for a sustainable contribution to society from the mining and minerals industries.
