An Introduction to the Theory of Seismology

K. E. Bullen - Nama Orang;

This book emerged from courses of lectures in Applied Mathematics given some time ago in the Universities of Auckland, Melbourne and Sydney. The present edition preserves the form of the more mathematical parts of the previous editions, but contains a number of major changes and much new matter, especially in the second half of the book. The earlier chapters give essential background theory on the mechanics of deformable media, including the transmission of waves subject to various boundary conditions. The theory in chapters 2 to 8 has been set down in a form which, it is hoped, will be found helpful to the general student of physics and applied mathematics, as well as to the student specialising in geophysics. Chapters 9 to 11 are concerned with the gathering and treatment of instrumental data on earthquake. In the remaining chapters, the theory and observational results are brought to bear on a variety of problems. From chapter 12 on, the changes have been considerable, resulting in a substantially larger book. Large portions of chapter 12 on near earthquake seismology have been re-written or extended.In chapter 13, the account of the variation of density and other physical properties of the earth's deeper interior is much more detailed, and the properties of the Earth Models A and B are set down explicitly. Chapter 14 on long period oscillations of the Earth is entirely new. Chapter 15 (which replaces the previous chapter 14) on conditions near the earthquake focus, and related topics, contains much new material. Chapters 16 and 17, on nuclear explosion seismology and extra terrestrial seismology, are new. Further new topics have been included in the final chapter 18.
