It will be noted that the general theme concerns filtering in the broad sense and not merely the different operations applied to seismic sections during processing at playback centers. We therefore construe filtering here to be the whole system of transformations imparted to seismic data by the earth, the processing. That is why we have studied the characteristic of analog and digital recording equipment which have a bearing on the preservation of information. Likewise, we have considered numerical calculation as a process which band-limits frequencies and causes the signal-to-noise ratio to vary. Finally, we have briefly discussed in the same sense, seismometers and their ground coupling and the emission of vibra. Bearing on seismic resolution, surface waves being considered here only in their gross aspect, without having to study the mechanics of their production in detail. In principle, everything is then directed to the same objective: to bring to the attention of geophysicsts the reason for things, so as to impress upon them the inherent limitations of the seismic method and how it can be improved. It will be useful to think about these different points when digital recording becomes widespread in certain countries while others are converting to analog recording on magnetic tape. In both cases, it is a question of knowing where we are going, what is feasible in practice and the predictions allowed by theory. Such is the thinking which has prompted this work.
