Depositional Systems
Sedimentation and stratigraphy have long been an integral part of the undergraduate geology curriculum. Some curricula contain a one-term combined course, others have separate courses in fashion. Over the past several decades there have been surprisingly few textbooks written for first-level courses on these topics, but there are several advanced or reference books emanating from various sources, especially topical symposia. The excellent and popular books of the 1950s, such as Stratigraphy and sedimentation by Krumbein and Sloss, Principles of Stratigraphy by Dunbar and Rodgers, and Sedimentary Rocks by Pettijohn, placed emphasis on the description of sediments, sedimentary rocks, and stratigraphic units. Basic principles of stratigraphy were emphasized but little was presented on the genesis of these stratigraphic units and the rocks contained therein. Thus book has resulted from many of the basic ideas of the UT-Austin group and is based on the course in the Depositional System (GLY 4550) as it is taught at the University of South Florida. The overall philosophy is to provide all undergraduate geology students with a broad-brush treatment of sedimentary geology. Principles are covered in the first four chapters to the extent that they are necessary to understand the remainder of the text. Undoubtedly, some instructors will feel that certain environments are stressed too much and others are treated too briefly. Such are the problem of any textbook. The examples of environments of deposition chosen from the rock record are intended to span a range in geologic time and are for the most part the well-known, classic studies. Most people will probably choose to add their own favorite examples and delete some which are presented here. The rider will encounter numerous reference citations within the text, more than are typical for a book aimed at this level. It is important for students to realize that textbooks are simply compilations of work originally done by hundreds of people. In the opinion of this writer, such citations are an integral part of the literature. All complete references are compiled at the end of the book rather than after each chapter. This arrangement facilitates their location as compared to searching for them at the end of a given chapter. Selected annotated references on each major topic are available after the chapters. A glossary of terms is also provided.
