Writing a book is a team effort. My team has been small but effective. Pride of place must go to Mrs Patricia Stewart who typed the entire first version of the manuscript with great patience, although sometimes reduced to muttering in her native Erse at the fiddly mathematical expressions. My reviewers worked nearly as hard, correcting, advising and stimulating. Dr Roger Mason of the Department of Geology, University College London, helped tremendously to clear the verbal jungle surrounding the earlier version. Dr Lee Belbin of the institute of Biological Resources, CSIRO, Canberra, provided a wealth of advice, and I am particularly grateful for his remarks on parameters, degrees of freedom, and numerical/computational procedures. Dr Dan Merriam, writing from Wichita State University, Kansas, gave me deep insight into differences of usaga of English between Scotland and North America. I fear I have not acted on a number of his suggestions and apologise to North American readers for retaining 'further','colour',etc., despite his reservations. He provided also a wealth of detailed observation, too voluminous to summarise here. Lastly, Dr Iaakov Karscz of the State Geological Survey of Israel, a valued associate of long standing, offered characteristically thoughtful remarks: I feel my response to many of his suggestions is somehow inadequate. The task of review complete, the second round of typing was accomplished in days by Mrs Marcia Wright (Introduction and Chs 1 & 2), Mrs Marcia Scrutton (Chs 3, 4 & 5), Mrs Ulla Hipkin (Chs 6, 7 & 8) and Mrs Margaret Swift (Chs 9 & 10). Roger Jones, Geoffrey Palmer, Elizabeth Royall and colleagues at Messrs George Allen & Unwin have been instrumental in guiding this project to fruition.
