Whitin the past decade tremendous strides have been made in many branches of structural geology and an adequate tretment of the whole subject would now require a series of books. No attempt at such an encyclopaedic coverage is made here. Rather, this book is primarily concerned with current methods of studying the geometry oof folded rocks and the associated minor structure. An attempt has been made to synthesize the scattered literature on these subjects into a single volume, and to present it in a format suitable for both senior undergraduate and graduate student teaching. This subject matter is not dealt with extensively in available textbooks, but the need for a book coveringthis field became apparent during the course of teaching at the University of London and Northwestern University. Until now many of the techniques and concept currently used in field work have only been described in scattered journal literatuer. However, this book is no more than a guide, and those interested in embarking on research have no alternative but to read the original journal articles. For this reason every attempt has been made to refer to the original journal sources throghout the text.
