Crystalline Plasticity and Solid State Flow in Metamorphic Rocks
Expansion in the geological sciences has taken place at an ever increasing tempo throughout the twentieth century and reached a climax in the plate-tectonic revolution of the 1960's. Initially, the theory provided, for the first time, an underlying explanation of present-day tectonic activity, but with subsequent years of consolidation the new insight has penetrated deeply into many branches of geology and geophysic. Furthermore, the geological sciences have benefited greatly in recent years, not only from the application of the concepts of plate-tectonic but also from notable advances in other branches of physical and biological sciences. The present time is thus one of broad advance in almost all aspects of the subject. Rapid advance brings with it difficulties for the teacher, the professional geologist and the student in keeping up to date with the new theories and findings. Few people can keep abreast of the avalanche of technical literature which has appeared in ever-increasing volume, and one way of helping scientists to achieve this is to supply reliable accounts epitomizing the advance of science. I hope this series of books will help fulfil this need. Thus this series of books on selected topics in geological sciences has been launched at an appropriate time. The individual books cover topics in which there have been recent advances in knowledge. They have been written for teacher, undergraduate and postgraduate students and for professional earth scientists. I am sure that the series will make an important contribution to the advanced of understanding in the geological sciences.
