The result of prospecting and exploration work on quarts send deposite are deseribed in this report. This geological work was carried out in compliance with Contract No. 363 signed by the Balikpapan Bay the representatives of the U.S.S.R on the one hand and by those of the Republic of Indonesia on the other on April 9, 1962.
It is the purpose of the investigations carried out in Eastern Kalimantan in the surrounding areas of Balikpapan and the Balikpapan Bay the disclose the quarts send reserven thich area to be used as foundry sands in casting production. The following five quarts san deposites were discovered and explored from March till December 15, 1963 Balikpapan, Kapau, Lawi-lawi, Sesulu and Sentil. All of then are situated under favourable geographic and economic conditions, near high-ways and settlements.

Geological structure of the deposits is simple. Quarts sands form horisontal deposit overlatin by the overburden of 0.25 - 0.54 m in the thickmoss. Internal structure of quarts sand bed is almost the same in all parts of the deposit. They consist ontireky of white, fine-grained quarts sand coming to 99 - 100 with sparse impregnations of grains of magnetite, limonite, ilmenite, rutike, sphalerite, pyrite, sircon, pyroxene and feldepar which altogether amount to not more than 0.5 - 1.0.

Average thckmess of quarts sand bed of each deposite rune as follows : Balikpapan - 4.15 m ; Kapau - 1.69 m ; Lawi-Lawi - 1.20 m ; Sesulu- 1.10 m ; Sentil - 0.8 m. The areas of quarts sands corresponding to the deposite sentioned above are the following ( in out-lines of calculated reserves ) : 246 thousand sq.metres ; 275 thousand sq.metres ; 345 thousand sq. metres ; 121.1 thousand sq. metres 178.1 thousand sq. metres.

Chemical and granulomatric composition of quarts sand within each deposite is the same. Average content of S102 is high varying from 98.84 up to 99,18 and the content of harmful admixture is nagligible : Fe2O3 = 0.06 - 0.27 ; CaO + MgO = 0.13 - 0.30 ; Na2O + K2O = 0.0 - 0.29 ; T102 = 0.0 - 0.03 ; SO3 = 0.0 - 0.14.

Granulometic composition of quarts sands partient to all the deposits is characerised by the concentration of basic fraction, the content of which on the three consecutive sieves ( 02 - 016 - 01 ) ranges from 74.5 in Lawd-Lawd up to S5.5 in Sentil deposit.

Average content of clayey component ranges from 0.76 to 3.01 and gas permeability from 117 to 240.

On the basis of chamical and granulometric compositions as well as content of clayey component and gas parmeability quarts send of all the deposits ( without data of technological taste ) are good to be used in caasting production as foundry sands of the following grades : Balikpapan - TO16A - 1Ko16A ; Kapau - 1KO16A ; Lawi-Lawi - TO16A ; Sesulu - 1KO16A ; and Sentil - 1KO16A.

Minig0technical and hydrogeological conditions for the exploitation of explored deposits are favourable and it is possible to apply strip mining method .
The quarts sand reserves of the deposits are as follows :
Balikpapan deposits - 154 thousand tons
Kapau deposits - 693 thousand tons
Lawi-lawi deposit - 580.5 thousand tons
Sesulu deposits - 200.8 thousand tons
Sentil deposit - 216.9 thousand tons
Total reserves of quarts sands are 3237.2 thousan tons.

The reserves of quarts sands which were disclosed can fully meet the requirements of the prodjected metallurgical plant in Kalimantan as well as they might be used for glase industry and other productions.
