Report On Prospecting Exploration Survey S.E Kalimantan 1963-1964
The result of prospecting-exploration on fire-proof clays and kaolins, whichwas carried out in South-East Kalimantanin 1963-1964, are briefly described in the present report.
The work was carried out by the Kalimantan Geological Expedition having the task of providing a future iron and stell plant with 0.5 - 1.0 mill.tons of fire-proof clays.
The investigation of the area was divided into 2 stage: 1). reconnaissance survey and 2). Prospecting-exploration work.
The prospecting-exploration work was carried out two revealed deposite, namely Tatakan and Bitahan.
Tatakan Deposite is represented by a secondary kaolin lens from 0.6 to 1.75 m. in thickness, covering an area of 0.14 sq.km. Kaolins from the deposite meet the requirements of raw material for manufacturing "chamote" and semi-acid products, hacing refractoriness of 1670'C; 1730' C and 1750' C.
The deposite can be mined using stripping methode. The kaolin reserves of categories "B+C1' amount to 289 thous.tons, compricing 151.2 thous.tons for "chamotte" product and 137.8 thous.tons for semi-acid product.
Bitahan Deposit is represented by 2 sheet-like strata or clays, ruging from 1.0 m to 5.95 m in thickness and the areas of occurrence are respectively 0.8 sq.km and o.19 sq.km.
The quality of the clays is insufficiently investigated due to lack of the majorty of laboratory test's results.
Based on the preliminary data, the clay from the deposit can largely be used for manufacturing semi-acid products, having refractoriness of 1670' C and to a lesser extent 1730' C. Besides, the clay may be used for foundry purpose.
The clay reserves of Bitahan Deposite are attributed to categories C1 and C2.
The deposit can be mined using a stripping methods. The reserves of fire-proof clay amount to 37.60 thous.tons, comparising 1935 thous.tons occurring above the underground water-table and 1825 thous.tons below the underground water-table.
Seven samples weighing 30 - 50 kg. each, which were taken from principal lithological varieties, were sent to the Soviet Union in order to be investigated on their laboratoty-technological properties.
After fulrilling the whole complex of laboratory-investigations or the clay raw materials, the qualitative feature snd figures, given in the present report, should be correted, based on those obtained results.
The revealed reserves of the refractory raw materials wil provide the future iron and steel plant with alumino-silicate refractory products as well as foundry clay for the whole amortization period.
The deposits deserve detail exploration inorder to change 30 - 40% or the required reserves into higer commercial categories.
