In this edition all the material has beenscrutinised and revised as neccessaryto take account of new result. Several completely new section have been added covering, for example wavelength standards, cosmic drays, atomic radii, calorific values of fuels, nuclear fusion and radioactive series. To accomodate this additional material, one or two topics which are now of little interest have been omitted: the most notewortly is the set of mathematical tables. It was with regret that the Board decided that the time had come to part with these, but pocket calculators now enable arithmetical computations to be carried out and provide values of the trigonometrical and exponential function to many more decimal places than it is possible to print. DrG. W. C. Kaye, FRS, one of the original authors, was Superintendent of the Physics Departement of the UK Nation Physical Laboratory and after he died in 1941 other physicsts at that laboratory contributed to the 9th edition, which was then in preparation. This close assocation has continued to the present day: all the members of the present Editorial Board and many of the cosntributors to this edition are, or were formely, members of UK national laboratories, particularly NPL and the Atomic Energy Research Establishment. The provision of standard of measurement and of high accuracy data is an important factor in economic well-being and has long been accepted as a resposibility of government in industrialised countries. we may prehaps expressthe hope that future government will continue to support longterm programmes in national laboratories for the generation of sciensific data whicch only those laboratories can provide.
