Pulau Krakatau dinamakan orang juga Pulau Rakata. Penduduk Banten dan suku Sunda, terutama suku Sunda yang berdiam di wilayah Jawa Barat bagian barat, lebih banyak mempergunakan nama Rakata, namun suku-suku bangsa Indonesia lainnya lebih banyak mempergunakan nama Krakatau. Dalam “Encyclopedie” van Nederlandsch Indie” juga dikatakan, bahwa Pulau Krakatau disebut orang juga Pulau Rakata.
