The science of geology is concerned with the earth and the rocks of which it is composed, the processes by which they were formed during geological time, and the modelling of the earth’s surface in the past and at the present day. The earth is not a static body, but is constantly subject to changes both at its surface and at deeper levels.
The geologist is concerned with every aspect of the composition and structure of the earth’s crust. His sphere of work is therefore worldwide; his main laboratory is he great out of doors where in examines rocks as they actually occur in nature.
Application of earth sciences to the solution of civil engineering problems or geotechnics constitutes the subject of this book. The point of view is that of the engineer and the earth science particulary geology have been brought into the engineering pattern only when they have direct bearing upon the problems under discussion.
The rapid growth of geothermal electrical generation in recent years has been accompanied by rapid growth in our knowledge of the behavior of reservoirs in their natural and exploited states. Good textbooks and literature surveys exist both for the earth sciences and for surface plant engineering.
