This paper reviews the times that silicic magmas related to major caldera systems spend in the crust prior to eruption. The significance of the time information is evaluated and combined with magma volumes and temperatures to quantify the mass and thermal fluxes associated to calderas.
In the later summer, 1981, the international symposium on “Arc Volcanism” was held in Tokyo and Hakone under the sponsorship of the volcanological society of Japan and the International Association of volcanology and chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI). More than 400 scientists attended the symposium and about 220 papers were read during the main session from August 31 through Sep…
Volcanism is one of nature’s primal spectacles. It commands our attention, whether for its awesome power, its danger, or its beauty. The years 1975-85 brought dramatic examples of volcanism – from the 1980 blasts of Mt. St. Helens, through the continuing lava river of Hawaii, to the tragic eruption of Colombia’s Nevado del Ruiz in 1985 and these have been abundantly documented by the news…
This thesis presents the results of a details trace element and isotope geochemistry study int the magma-genesis of volcanoes in the Adonara-Pantar Section (APS) of the East Sunda Arc in Indonesia, a setting where an oceanic island arc is colling with a passive continental margin.
Mount Merapi, island are volcano located in the center of Java (Indonesia), lies upon the remnents of a volcano older than 400.000 years called Pre-Merapi. Sensu stricto Merapi is a very young volcano characterised by a rapid edification. Its history is divided into four periods (ancient, Middle aged, Recent and Historical Merapi).
The thesis concerns current, historic and prehistoric volcanism in Indonesia. Investigations have been made on several spatial and temporal scales using a combination of remote sensing, geochemistry and morphological analysis.
