Papandayan di Kabupaten Garut pada bulan Juli 2004, telah dilakukan peninjauan dan evaluasi potensi lahar atau lebih tepat aliran debris yang terdapat di daerah tangkapan (catchment area) dan material yang ada di sepanjang aliran dua sungat Ciparugpug dan Cibeureumgede.

Gunung Gede merupakan gunungapi aktif yang berbentuk strato, yang posisinya berdekatan dengan Gunung Pangrango yang berbeda di sebelah barat-baratlaut. Tubuh gunungapi ini dibentuk oleh hasil erupsi eksplosif maupun efusif berupa bom vulkanik, lapili, pasir hingga abu, awan panas dan leleran lava yang kemudian membentuk kerucut.
